Artie- Management forces a "vacation?"

So, did your guys hear yesterday that supposedly Sirius Management has told Artie to take a leave of Absence? I love Artie on the show, but frankly his work performance and drug use would've gotten him fired from any other organization and I think this is a necessary move. Hopefully Artie is in rehab because I don't believe there's any way that Artie has stopped his substance abuse. Also makes me think about how Artie has said that he would ruin this gig the same as he's done others.

Artie the liar

The past few months I've found my self not liking Artie as much anymore. He lies, constantly, and then is outraged when people accuse him of lying. He's become more vicious and spiteful and nasty to people (especially women), instead of funny. I guess these are all side effects of addiction, but he's really just started to irritate me. I use to love him and was always sad when he missed a show, and now I don't even mind if he sleeps through an interview. I mean, his put-downs aren't based on humor anymore, they are based on the very junior high school idea of hatefully taking people down a notch to feel better about yourself. Now when an argument starts up between Artie and someone else, I find myself just turning the radio off for a while. He makes me sad and disgusted.

Report: Sirius XM on the ropes, EchoStar ready to pounce

The satellite radio company could file for bankruptcy within days, according to the New York Times. Waiting in the wings? EchoStar, which has already taken on much of Sirius XM's mounting debt. So, is satellite radio about to go silent?

Well … not quite yet. I doubt that the service would go dark overnight were Sirius XM to file for bankruptcy protection, but as the Times points out, the company might have to cut some of its pricier shows—I'm looking at you, Howard Stern—during a restructuring.

Another scenario: A takeover by EchoStar, the satellite TV company that's circling Sirius XM like a vulture.

So, how did Sirius XM get into this mess? Chalk it up to a mountain of debt: $3.25 billion, give or take, about $175 million of which the cash-strapped company owes this month.

As Bloomberg reports, Sirius XM turned down a takeover bid from EchoStar back in December; since then, EchoStar has been buying up chunks of Sirius XM's debt.

Neither Sirius XM nor EchoStar are talking, but sources tell the New York Times that the two respective CEOs—who are "said not to get along"—are "locked" in negotiations. (That must be a fun meeting.)

Negotiations over … what? Well, the Wall Street Journal (via Tech Trader Daily) reports that EchoStar is offering to bail out Sirius XM by restructuring its debt and pumping in some much-needed cash—in exchange for total control, of course. If that happens, say hello to "Sirius XM: An EchoStar service."

The alternative: Sirius XM files for bankruptcy, leaving EchoStar to pick over the remains in bankruptcy court.

Either way, I'm pretty sure we're looking at the end of Sirius XM as we know it. The best scenario for subscribers, I'm guessing, is a takeover by the well-funded EchoStar, which could probably keep the satellite radio service afloat without skipping a beat.

But bankruptcy … well, if that happens, prepare for Howard Stern to be replaced by Crazy Chuck, broadcasting live from his mobile home in West Sacramento.

The channels have changed, not for the better, even Bubba's show is not live anymore, except on Friday, and now they want another $36.00 per year after promising online would be free to subscribers? After a lengthy engagement, the Sirius Satellite shock jock has taken the marital plunge with longtime girlfriend Beth Ostrosky, tying the knot in an A-list private event at New York City's famed Le Cirque restaurant Friday night.

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos topped the guest list, with Consuelos, who became an ordained minister over the summer, performing the ceremony.

Jimmy Kimmel, Sarah Silverman, Adam Carolla, Barbara Walters, Billy Joel and wife Katie Lee, Joan Rivers, Stern's radio cohosts Robin Quivers and Artie Lang, Chevy Chase, Donald and Melania Trump and John Stamos were among the event's 180 esteemed attendees.

Consuelos wasn't the only one pulling double duty: Joel sang a song and Chase delivered an X-rated toast following the ceremony.

Ostrosky donned a Marquesa wedding dress for the big day, which has been something of a long time coming.

The 54-year-old radio personality popped the question to the 36-year-old model-actress on Valentine's Day 2007.

But as far back as 2006, Stern announced on his radio show that he and Ostrosky had already tied the knot, only to say later that it was a prank.

On Aug. 23, a family celebration at the couple's Hamptons home led some press to assume that the duo had quietly taken their trip down the aisle, though Ostrosky later revealed it was simply a celebration of their impending nuptials.

I's the first marriage for Ostrosky and the second for Stern, who split from first wife Alison in 2000. For years after, he famously vowed he would never marry again, a flip-flop promise he explained away during a trip to the Late Show With David Letterman earlier this year.

"I'm a hypocritical liar, as you know," Stern said. "Things change, love happens, love blossoms."

my trouble with the show

I like the Stern show and listen all the time. It is often funny/interesting/entertaining. However...

There is a bullying aspect to Howard and the show I really don't like. The latest example is with Eric and the love doll. I think it's degrading to make a doll in the image of someone against their will in order to perform sex acts on it. And the fact that they keep emphasizing there's nothing he can do about it, makes it even worse. I wonder if some other radio show made a Beth O doll and fucked it while people watched, would Howard think it's funny?

I know Eric isn't the most likable person in the world (I don't particularly like him myself, to be honest). And, yes, he calls into the show by choice, and they got him a role on a tv show, etc. But he is a powerless man with a horrible disease while Howard is a rich and famous radio personality. I can't help thinking of it in those terms

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks Howard, I wish I could relate to your elaborate lifestyle of living in the Hamptons with your hot fiance, but I'm just an ordinary joe with a less than glamorous job. I do have a hot girlfriend if that's any consolation.

I'm still going to keep my subscription and not be all dramatic and say that I'm sick of your vacations (or the timing of them) and that I'm canceling my subscription since I do like SIRIUS. But I'm just saying you suck. I'm still a fan, but you suck.

For some reason, I like ETM. His contribution to the show is nothing but pure "exploitation" of an idiot...and I like it. I get a kick when he calls and Artie already saying "Okay, thanks. Bye" - pure sarcasm at it's best. And then you got Fred in the background playing that "quack quack" voice from Mars Attacks, along with the Dr. Who theme as well. I get a pure kick out of it and I just can't stop busting a smirk and laugh.

His current beef with Johnny is pure joy to me. Yeah, Eric doesn't have a clue. He thinks he's someone important, but he's not. I think that's why I find it so amusing.

I did send an e-mail to the show stating my opinion - similar to what I wrote here - since it looks as tho there were many "anti-ETM" messages. I'm with Howard, I find this "pud" fascinating. Wonder if he'll read my e-mail.

It was nice of Howard to start Monday's show with a mini tribute to this comic genius, trailblazer and icon. Howard is right about George being "not a good guest for the show". George kept his private life "private" and that is not what Howard's show is about. I've seen Carlin interviewed and although interesting it is a bit "long". I hope Howard doesn't regret this decision.

I've been a fan of Georges since the late 70s (my teens) and thoroughly loved his first HBO special! He had a special way with words, to say the least.

I like the premise of the best of the week on Friday's. I just got done listening to "Artie's Journey" on the Wrap-up Show - something that I missed earlier - and it's great to hear. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like listening to old Howard from the 80's and 90's (maybe some of them), I just don't like it forced on me ALL day on 100. If I'm going to have to listen to a repeat on Friday, then I want to hear something recent.

so The Boy and i sat down for some good howardtv viewing this weekend and we watched the daily show where langford reported kenneth keith's death... and first off, wow, langford rocks... he is a true journalist AND he has a heart... i admire him so much...

so yeah, kenneth keith, what a sad, sad story... they added in some bonus features at the end of the show and i finally got to see mr. kallenbach's work and HOLY SHIT but the man was a comic fucking genius... he may have had no idea what the fuck he was doing but he was a god! i couldn't get enough... i'm not sure why howard didn't want to feature him anymore...

p.s. - i also highly recommend:
daily show 5/5: richard pees in diaper - i'll watch richard do just about anything but THIS is fitting to be an alltime classic... looking at his pee-dripping junk did get to be a little too much for me and i had to scream and cover my eyes...

world's biggest hemorrhoid contest - i got about 2 minutes into this and had to go in the other room cos it grossed me out so hard, but The Boy was strong and sat through it and he was practically peeing his pants he was laughing so hard

htv animated shorts - new kenny lofton stuff - really good!

i know i might get flamed for this but i have to say it.

i think it's kinda some bullshit that artie is back on the show and everybody's just happy as hell and thinks it's great.

yes, we are all happy that artie is going to continue to make us laugh. that's great.

but artie is a bully... whether or not you like high-pitch mike or teddy or whatever, artie is a bully... i don't care about his racial east coast bullshit or his homophobia... blah blah blah that's all his schtick, his act... it makes people laugh and identifiy with him... and that's fine.

but he works in a workplace like many of us do and he has no control over himself in the workplace... he sleeps on the job... continuously calls in sick... and worst of all, is abusive to co-workers...

i've worked with people like artie and i HATED the fact that they were bullies and that they got away with it... the entitlement that comes with being a bully in a workplace where it's tolerated is obscene...

if i worked at sirius i'd be pissed that you can abused like that and it's just laughed off if you're one of the "cool kids"...

After Jackie left the show, I thought there was something missing from the Stern show. I didn't listen as often. All the rotating comedians and guests in "Jackie's chair" didn't do the trick for me.

Then Artie came along. I think he filled in the void that was there after Jackie's departure. In fact, I liked him even better than Jackie. I started listening to the show every day again.

Now - if Artie's gone - the show will be missing something for me again. I'll probably listen a lot less. In fact, it may not be worth it to me to keep my Sirius subscription. I'm not saying they'll be wrong to suspend/fire Artie; I'm not saying they'll be right. I'm just saying the show wont be the same for me without Artie.

At a benifit comedy concert in Union, New Jersey, Thursday night, Artie said, "I'll be back on Monday ..." in response to questions from the fans. This isn't a verbatim report. This is what I heard on my stiletto this afternoon. I repeated it several times to get the gist of the news story.

Now does this mean that he'll be back on the air "in studio"? Or on the phone? ISDN line? We'll see ....

I mean, it was like he thought "Do I want to help try and stop a 300+ lb. bull with fire in its eyes or do I want to drag a waiting victim, who weighs a mere buck and a half, out of that room" ...

It kind of reminds me of that story of the father bull and his son sitting on a hill overlooking a field filled with cows.

I'm not hating on Artie with my posts. I'm hating on most of his behaviors and attitudes. I really wish he would check his demons for the sake of himself ... not just the show.

Holy shit ! Artie snoring and falling out of "bed" had me barely able to keep working. My coworkers and I were gathered around the radio waiting to see what happens next..I think I even heard him snoring over the commercial break. I hope Artie starts taking better care of himself I'd love for him to stick around. Within 2 minutes of waking up his mouth was full of food. Wow ! One of his first comments after waking up was "is my contract over yet".Too much.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — The US Justice Department gave approval to a planned merger of US satellite radio groups Sirius and XM, saying the tie-up is unlikely to harm consumers or lessen competition.

The deal still needs approval from the Federal Communications Commission, which manages broadcast licenses.

Although the two companies operate the only satellite radio firms in the US market, the Justice Department said there is "a lack of competition between the parties in important segments even without the merger" and that consumers may still choose "alternative services."

Additionally, the agency cited:" technological change that is expected to make those alternatives increasingly attractive over time; and efficiencies likely to flow from the transaction that could benefit consumers."

The Justice Department added: "Although the firms in the past competed to attract new subscribers, there has never been significant competition between them for customers who have already subscribed to one or the other service and purchased the requisite equipment.

"Also, competition for new subscribers is likely to be substantially more limited in the future than it was in the past."

Sirius had more than 8.3 million subscribers at the end of 2007 compared with nine million for XM.

Some critics of the deal argued that a combined satellite group would benefit from sharing the same broadcast stars and could bring an end to rival bidding wars for top talent.

New York-headquartered Sirius broadcasts over 125 digital-quality channels, including 69 channels of commercial-free music and counts the controversial star Howard Stern among its broadcasters, as well as home lifestyle guru Martha Stewart.

XM boasts over 170 digital channels and offers a range of sports, music, news and talk radio, as well a device that allows subscribers to listen to its programs in their cars.

Since 2001, satellite radio has grown from a niche medium into a larger phenomenon across the United States.

Its total audience reach is around 10 percent of all Americans and some seven percent of car-drivers, according to Sirius and XM.

The subscription fees starting at about 12 dollars per month allow consumers to get high-quality broadcasts of specific themed programs, ranging from country music to hard rock to talk radio.

Reacting to the announcement, the two companies said in a joint statement they were "working with the FCC to secure final regulatory approval."

The Consumer Electronics Association meanwhile hailed the announcement.

"We applaud the Department of Justice for acting in the public interest to provide clarity in the marketplace and confidence to consumers," the group said.

"To the extent consumers have been awaiting a decision on this merger to purchase satellite radio systems, they can now move forward with confidence. Now that the DOJ has approved this merger without conditions, we urge the FCC to move quickly to a decision."

XM shares rose 15 percent on the news to 13.79 and Sirius climbed 8.6 percent to 3.15. The two firms each have a market value above four billion dollars.

At the time the deal was announced, the firms said it would create a company with a value of 13 billion dollars.

so i'm a relatively new listener (june of 07) with a boyfriend who has been listening since the early 90's with time off between when howard left terrestrial and june of 07 (duh!)... so when we happened upon the 17 minutes of madness that was artie in vegas, drunk out of his fucking mind at the show and directly afterwards up in his room he was all over showing me this as it is a piece of show history... and it did not look really good for artie... i was kind of surprised and disgusted that artie was encouraged to keep drinking beyond what soon appeared perhaps physically dangerous levels... and his total out of control behavior became painful to watch... this is a really messed up guy... and this was about 2 years ago i think?... just showed a side of artie that was sad, out of control and a little bit ass-hole-ish if i might add...

i like artie... i hate to see him at his worst...

What did you think of this Battle Royale?

I thought Artie was a little tough on Sal at the end. Physically threatening Sal (though maybe he didn't really mean it) and then saying he hopes Sal's kid gets AIDS (though he admitted he was wrong for saying this later) was going too far.

But other than this, I think Artie was mostly right...Sal and Richard do seem to whine and compare themselves to Artie too much. Sal especially seems to be socially retarded sometimes.

I've been reading the comments here on tribe and on the Howard Stern fan site, and one thing that's interesting is that people who like Sal (or dislike Artie) are saying Sal's right while people who like Artie (or dislike Sal) are saying Artie's right.

I'm sure many of you reading this are saying "Duh", but I don't necessarily think that way. I mean I think Artie is 100 times funnier and more talented than Sal (or Richard). I would hate it if Artie weren't on the show. I don't think I would give a shit that much if Sal or Richard weren't on the show. But that doesn't necessarily mean I think Artie's right about what went on this past week.
